Hey gals,
So I sent you my blog for a reason and that is so that you guys can read my thoughts and aspirations! I've done my soul-searching and have found a sensible way to live my life. Just want to share some of my everyday readings and thoughts. Its a good way to keep in touch especially now that we are all so busy. It will definitely focus on a students life. More specifically, being a GIRL, trying to become a SUCCESSFUL woman, and how we can work past the obstacles that
seperate the two. I'm almost 22 now, and I still feel like I have room to grow. I picked up the book "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office" recently. Its a little bit advance for me, because it is a help book for people who already have an established career. So far I've picked out a few things that make a lot of sense to me! Just want to share them.
Girls have been taught to be nice, quiet girls. This
after all is considered polite and "ladylike". However, the reason why men dominate the work field is they are aggressive and outspoken. Girls tend to apologize when they share their opinion. An example is someone who speaks like "I'm sorry if I'm offending you but I think ....". Another example is the girl who smiles too much in serious situations. These ladylike behaviours are what hurts us in the
competitive business world. It
sabotages our careers. It causes us to get overlooked and our ideas don't get taken seriously. I
haven't had the time to sit down and read more. Just working on what the book talks about in the introduction. I'll post good "Mistakes" as I get to them :)
One more quote that stuck to me was "Dress for the job you want, not the one you have." So, make sure to look the part and not draw too much attention. Things to avoid are: wearing
inappropriate clothes, posting drunk pictures on
facebook, revealing too much of your personal life to your potential colleagues! (All something I am trying to be conscious of now).
Anyhow, I invite feedback from you young and successful women. Whether you're already there or trying to get there, any insight will do. I hope it will prepare me for graduation and whatever awaits me.
Lots of Love,
Sophia
